Laboratory identification of cryoglobulinemia from automated blood cell counts, fresh blood samples, and blood films.

چکیده
Four cases showing different means to detect cryoglobulins are reported: effects on blood cell counts performed on 2 technologically different automated hematology instruments and microscopic features in fresh blood samples and on May-Grünwald-Giemsa-stained bloodfilms. These cases were chosen for their instructive value in depicting all artifacts associated with cryoglobulins. Laboratory recognition of the cryoglobulins is important to correct factitious results with automated blood cell counters, mainly pseudoleukocytosis and pseudothrombocytosis. Moreover cryoglobulin-induced laboratory artifacts may be the first factor prompting the assessment for cryoglobulinemia and the diagnosis of the underlying cause.

Performance of automated slidemakers and stainers in a working laboratory environment – routine operation and quality control
The automated slidemaker/stainers of the four Beckman Coulter LH755 hematology systems in our laboratory are operated as analyzers, with similar requirements for setup, maintenance and quality control. A study was performed to confirm that these slide maker/stainers in routine use produce peripheral blood films that are completely satisfactory for microscopy and without cells, particularly abno...

Background: Presently, the graphical data of blood cells (histograms and cytograms or/ scattergrams) that they are usually available in all modern automated hematology analyzers are an integral a part of automated complete blood count (CBC). To find incorrect results from automated hematology analyzer and establish the samples that require additional analysis, Laboratory employees will use thos...
متن کاملHematological Reference Values for Healthy Males in the Central Part of Iran
Background and Objectives: Laboratory reference values are an important tool for clinical management of patients. Reference values being used in most laboratories in Iran have been provided from the established reference values from developed countries. However, several variables can affect on these laboratory parameters. Therefore, this study was carried out to establish the reference value...
متن کاملPseudoleukocytosis secondary to hepatitis C-associated cryoglobulinemia: a case report
INTRODUCTION Laboratory tests play a central role in assessing a patient and orienting the diagnostic evaluation. We report a case where the discrepancy between the manual and automatic cell count gave a hint to the final diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION A 55-year-old Caucasian man, known to have hepatitis C, was admitted with acute respiratory failure secondary to acute pulmonary edema and diffu...
متن کاملDetermination of Platelet and White Blood Cell Counts from Peripheral Blood Smear: An Indispensable Method in Under-resourced Laboratories
Objective: Blood smear examination serves as a quality control tool in verifying the results generated by the automated analyzer and identification of abnormal or immature cells amongst other functions. This study was undertaken to estimate platelet and White Blood Cell (WBC) counts from Peripheral Blood Smear (PBS) and to correlate them with the results from automated method. Materials and Met...
